President-elect Ursula von der Leyen presented her team and the new structure of the next European Commission. The new Commission will reflect the priorities and ambitions set out in the Political Guidelines.
Janusz Wojciechowski, was a long-serving Member of the European Parliament in the Agriculture Committee, and is currently a Member of the European Court of Auditors. He will now be in charge of agriculture issues within the Commission.
The outgoing Commissioner Phil Hogan has brought about important changes within the agri sector and will now bring his experience to the ‘Trade’ portfolio.
Providing affordable food to Europeans as well as ensuring a fair income to producers were the headlines in the mission letter that President-elect Ursula von der Leyen addressed to Janusz Wojciechowski. The various tasks of the new Commissioner shall focus on bringing about modern, healthier and sustainable agriculture. This target is meant to be implemented through the following;
- a modern and simplified CAP
- implementation of the new policy
- ‘farm to fork’ strategy
- zero-pollution ambition
- strengthen the system of geographical indications
- long-term vision for rural areas
- promote high quality food standards of European foods around the world.
Congratulations to the new Agri Commissioner from Malta!
