During a brief visit to Zagreb for an EU CAP Network workshop, I had the pleasure of meeting the dynamic Ilija Jurić, who manages the operations of a thriving microenterprise named Tukan greens alongside his family and a team of young employees.
Located in Velika Gorica, the Tukan greenhouses span 3000 square meters, serving as the hub for cultivating products for the discerning tastes of chefs, bartenders, and culinary enthusiasts. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant hues and exotic allure of tropical birds, the business is aptly named after the Toucan, reflecting its recent emphasis on cultivating edible flowers, microgreens, and exotic plants.
A standout investment at Tukan is the modern desiccator, a vital asset that enables Ilija to diversify production during the harsh winter months when regular production slows down due to the cold weather. Partially funded by the EU, this machine possesses the capability to desiccate a variety of fruits and herbs, including strawberries, apples, and citrus fruits. The resulting dried produce can be packaged as wholesome snacks, incorporated into the menus of bars and restaurants, or further processed to create aromatic herbal teas.

In addition to producing and marketing their own range of dried herbs, Ilija extends his expertise by offering drying services to other enterprises seeking to preserve their products. These dried goods are meticulously packaged and presented to consumers, ensuring quality is maintained throughout the process.
Ilija’s commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his prestigious accolade as the Best Croatian Farmer in 2022. With evident pride, he fondly reminisces about receiving this esteemed recognition in Brussels, a testament to his dedication and innovation within the agricultural realm.
